What is the Gay Straight Alliance?

The Gay Straight Alliance welcomes all students in grades 6th, 7th and 8th. The program meets on Thursday afternoons and the goal of the club is to provide a safe space for ALL students, including LGBTQ students and allies who support them. It was established to help create a school wide climate of acceptance that celebrates individuality and freedom of self-expression, without fear of emotional or physical harassment. The club uses active discussion among leaders and members to raise enlightenment of current social issues that will break down the barriers of oppression and privilege we see every day, while maintaining diversity in thoughts, ideas and actions. Students plan activities such as a school-wide participation in the National Day of Silence and discuss ways to make Weber and the Port Washington community a more accepting and affirming community.
